It may seem strange and improbable that the numbers of your birthday hold so much information about you and your life. It certainly felt that way to me in the beginning, when I first began to study numerology in India. I want to be very frank about this. In the fields of astrology, numerology, tarot, etc, there is an incredible amount of new age crap being foisted on innocent and gullible minds. I have never been interested in using any sort of system to define and categorize people. You do not need one more person to label you, to put you in a box. Who you really are is an infinite and unfathomable being. To define and limit you, to predict your life or your behavior, is to deny the essential freedom and fluidity of your being. A reading with me does not predict your future, tell you who you were six lifetimes ago, or which number will win the lottery. My intention is quite different. The readings I give are an opportunity for you to reconsider everything you think you know about yourself and your life. The numbers reveal patterns of possibility. Our whole universe is permeated with an infinite creative intelligence. We see it in a flock of birds, wheeling in the sky, in the way plants grow toward the sun. This intelligence expresses itself in a myriad of ways. One of these ways is the numbers of your birth date. Sometimes I think of them as a code, a puzzle that we can decipher, without destroying the living mystery at the heart of each life.

Your particular combination of numbers works like a mirror of your inner being. It reflects your soul, essence, or true nature first of all-the truth and freedom of that. And it reflects the patterns of your conditioning-all the ways in which your life experience has suppressed or distorted the free expression of who you really are. For most of us, this conditioning began in our childhood. It was very difficult for our parents to recognize and support our authentic being, so we learned how to fit in by adjusting and compromising. This process continues throughout our early life. It is rare to find that kind of recognition in our schools or in our work place. So we gradually, slowly, begin to lose track of our genuine longing, our heart, our intuitive intelligence, and our real direction in life. Numerology can help us find our way back, not by imposing another system of knowledge on our mind, but by unlocking the awareness that is deep inside us.
Our true nature
We begin numerology with the understanding that our essence is spirit or light-that which is unconditioned. The truth of our being is much more than a body and mind. At the deepest level, at the source, we are one, with no separation at all. If we imagine this source as light or space, then who can divide your spirit? It’s indivisible, by its very nature. But when spirit comes into this world of name and form, each soul has a different way of playing, learning, and evolving.
The numbers represent your own unique way of being in the world. You can think of each number like a force field, a vibratory potency that unfolds itself in your experience. Within each number we find the evolutionary impulse, the deep urge from the heart that show us how your spirit wants to express itself in life. In the beginning this soul urge or impulse is healthy and clear. The difficulties arise when that urge gets translated through the mind, because the nature of the mind distorts and confuses the original clarity.

The life journey
Each of us is on a life-long journey. People often think their journey is about improving themselves, pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps. That kind of understanding creates a lot of problems. It causes us to reject ourselves and our own experience, and to get caught in striving for some imaginary goal. This approach begins from a radically different place- it begins with the truth that you are already whole. The truth of your essential being is shining just as bright in this moment as it ever will, even if you can’t see or feel it. Instead of self-improvement, imagine your soul unfolding and evolving like a tree, or a river. This movement from within is not based on lack, on a feeling that something is missing or wrong. It is simply calling you to step into all that you are, the totality of your being, and to participate fully in life. And the very first step is allowing and respecting your experience just as it is.
A lot of the time, when we face all the different parts of ourselves and see how contradictory and unruly they are, we settle for excluding some of these aspects in order to make life simpler and easier. But then we cut ourselves off from the vast and complex nature of who we are. Numerology can help us look at all the different aspects and dimensions of our being, and find a way to welcome them all, so they can function in a natural harmony.
Life Cycles
The indigenous traditions of our world have always recognized that our life happens in cycles, just like everything else in the universe. Knowing where we are in our life cycles can be very helpful. There is a time to forge ahead, and a time to rest, a time to begin things, and a time to complete them, a time to manifest and a time to go within. If we work against the energy and frequency of our cycle, we will feel like a fish swimming upstream. Flowing with the energy of our cycles is a very intelligent thing to do.
Gifts and challenges
One of the key principles in numerology is something I learned a long time ago from my teacher in India. He said to me one day, “What you now think of as your greatest strength will one day be your greatest weakness, and what you call your greatest weakness, will one day be your greatest strength.” In the years since I heard this, I have seen from my own experience how true this is. Everything that appears in our world has two sides to it. Nothing is black or white. Many of the numbers carry tremendous gifts, and usually, the greater the gift, the stronger the challenge that comes along with it. Or you can think of it the other way around-every challenge carries a great gift.
Our gifts are not always easy to manage. Sometimes we come to rely so heavily on one particular gift that it overshadows our other capacities and resources, causing us to develop in an unbalanced way. We need to understand how to use our gifts in a way that supports our whole being.
