Lifeletter #20- Enough

Please print this lifeletter if you can. It is meant to be held in your hand.

Enough

Enough. These few words are enough.
If not these words, this breath.
If not this breath, this sitting here.

This opening to the life
we have refused
again and again
until now.

Until now.

(David Whyte)

These days it seems to me that this tiny word ‘enough’ is like a mantra, a power packed seed syllable, a doorway into another universe, if we are willing to contemplate and work with it. A while ago I was talking to my daughter about the endless greed and destruction of the global corporations. “What’s driving them?” I asked her. “How come a billion dollars isn’t enough?”

“Don’t you get it?” she said. (Thank you Coco) “It’s an addiction. When is there enough cocaine? Enough alcohol? Enough sugar?”

Those bright cool moments of clarity. How sweet they are, and how they continue to blossom and deepen. Since then I’ve realized that every ego is a mini-corporation, driven by its own addictions, endlessly moving away from the feeling at the core: “I’m not enough. This moment is not enough. Something is missing.”

All of us are still bathing in the bright light of the Solstice. July is a very powerful month this year, with all sorts of cosmic convergences, and events like the Live Earth Concerts. ( Please read my note on Fire the Grid, below) There’s a profound opportunity being offered, a moment in our lives when we can find the strength to face into the nature of our human conditioning, and finally let go into the truth of enough.

Next week I’m moving into a new house, with tiny little closets. No room for all my clothes. Time to let go of everything extra, and relax into what is enough.

Even the house is not exactly the house of my dreams. We bought it as an investment, and then realized, when property values skyrocketed, that we were going to live here. As renovations began, all I could see was what was lacking, until a dear friend and visionary came over this week. It was like a visitation from the Goddess of Enough. (Thank you Dienna) We showed her where our wood floors had warped, near the door, and she said. “Oh, I love that look!” What a vision. Can you look at your wrinkles, your foibles, your weaknesses, like that?

Here’s the hard truth we are being invited to face: there’s never enough of anything as long as you think you are separate and alone in the universe. You can’t solve the feeling of lack on the level of your human conditioning. It’s a hopeless quest, full of endless disappointment and frustration. Save yourself the trouble and stop now, let go, and open to the fullness/emptiness of this moment. And this one. Fullness and emptiness without end.

There’s another side to the word enough. (This contemplation was first offered to me by my friend and teacher Michael Smith. Thank you Michael)
The other side is the feeling that comes up from deep inside and says “It’s enough already!” Enough suffering, enough struggle, enough doubt, enough despair, enough compromise. How easy it is to ignore that knowing, and continue tolerating what our whole being is longing to release, to move through, to say goodbye to forever. What have you had enough of in your life, in yourself? If you were ruthlessly honest with yourself, what would that be? What help do you need, what allies could you call on, to support you in letting that go? There are times for new beginnings, there are times to let things come to an end. Completely.

And even when we finally open to the first enough, when we realize that we are actually living and walking in the Fields of Plenty, our soul keeps moving, evolving, growing. Evolution has no end. You can’t just sit down and put your feet up. You’ve got to dance your dance out.

“Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.” ( ‘Burnt Norton’ T.S. Elliot)

with love
Shayla

Fire the Grid:
July 17, 2007, is a cosmic moment. Check out Shelly Yates’ amazing story at http://www.firethegrid.com Before this happened Shelly was an ordinary human being, full of cynicism and despair about our collective fate as human beings.  The extraordinary event recounted on her web site revealed an opportunity for humanity that could create an enormous shift for planet Earth and all her life.

Read this information carefully, take it into your heart and share it with everyone you know. We can all participate July 17, in any way that we feel inspired, through prayer, song, meditation, dance, or by just being fully present and happy.

Please don’t miss this opportunity. We are all interconnected.  You are not a small, powerless being. Each one of us plays a part in what is going to happen to all of us on this beautiful planet. Thank you for reading this.
