Learning to Support the Movement of our Evolution
Writing can be a very powerful way of doing inquiry, for the purpose of awakening and transforming our lives. All that it requires is a basic ground of willingness and commitment. Willingness to look at things as they are, not as they should be or could be—to face directly into the way it actually is, right now.
We can use writing for this kind of inquiry, asking ourselves basic and powerful questions like these: “What do I really want? What is my major obstacle? What happens to me when I don’t get what I want? What do I care about more than anything else? What is my strongest resource? Do I know how to ask for and receive support?”
We may think we know the answers to these questions, but we are not looking for a mental response when we inquire like this. We are learning to drop the question into our heart, into our body, into a place of deep listening. In this place, we are ready for whatever comes forth in response to the question. And this kind of response is not something old, something we’ve heard hundreds of times before. It’s new and alive and we feel it; we feel the impact of what we have discovered. That’s what makes the difference.
The next step invites us to respond in a more grounded way, with an intention, a way of following through with what has emerged for us. In this part of the process, we use inquiry again, asking ourselves what we are actually willing to do here—what kind of commmitment actually feels do-able. This is something we are prepared to commit to because we really want to do it, not because someone else has told us.
The last part of this inquiry is discovering how it is to stay with our commitment—how to hold ourselves accountable in a good way, an empowering way. This is a big thing to learn—it’s what allows us to live like a grown up instead of a child. All of us have different gifts—some people have powerful insights but are unable to move into action. Other people are great at starting things, but they get distracted and discouraged before reaching completion. A lot of people do not know how to access the help they need in order to respond to what is calling them.
This kind of inquiry is what allows us to wake up, rethink our strategies, beliefs and points of view--and begin to really participate in life, without holding back.
